Mykola Bilous (1956-2023)
Ukrainian painter Mykola Bilous studied at the Crimean College of Painting and the Kharkiv Institute of Art and Industry. Creator of a revolutionary method of color harmonization known in color theory as inversion, he is considered a post-media artist: building on the principle of Bauhaus theorists, he uses primary tones (three primary colors in the same proportions of 1:3 each together) and a thin layer of other colors between primary and secondary colors in complementary contrast, creating an exciting combination of contrasting colors. Mykola Bilous virtuously uses the primary tone as shadow and the colors as light. Thus black becomes the surrounding space of the main composition, the motifs appear like theatrical scenes against a darkened background, and the figures advance to heroes of a brightly lit night. This unique and delicate relationship with color is the beguiling component that brings Mykola Bilous’ works so incorruptibly intense and immediate to life.

Der ukrainische Maler Mykola Bilous studierte an der Hochschule für Malerei auf der Krim und am Institut für Kunst und Industrie in Charkiw. Als Schöpfer einer revolutionären Methode der Farbharmonisierung, die in der Farbtheorie als Inversion bekannt ist, gilt er als Post-Medien-Künstler: Aufbauend auf dem Prinzip der Bauhaus-Theoretiker verwendet er Grundtöne (drei Primärfarben in den gleichen Proportionen von je 1:3 zusammen) und eine dünne Schicht anderer Farben zwischen Primär- und Sekundärfarben im Komplementärkontrast, so dass er eine spannende Kombination gegensätzlicher Farben schafft. Virtuos setzt Mykola Bilous dabei den Grundton als Schatten und die Farben als Licht ein. So wird Schwarz zum umgebenden Raum der Hauptkomposition, die Motive erscheinen wie theatralische Szenen vor einem abgedunkelten Hintergrund, und die Figuren avancieren zu Helden einer hell erleuchteten Nacht. Diese einzigartige und feinfühlige Beziehung zu Farbe ist die betörende Komponente, die Mykola Bilous’ Werke so unbestechlich intensiv und unmittelbar lebendig werden lässt.
